I am getting ready to order the materials to paint the bottom of my boat.

I took it down to the bare wood, applied a coat of cpes, filled all bolt and screw holes that needed repair, and will be applying the second coat of cpes.

The boat will only be in the water when in use. I am wondering if I need to use a primer before I paint. Also is Interlux Brightside Polyurethane topside paint acceptable since it will not be stored in the water at anytime.

I have used the Top Side paints on my boat without any problems. Should be fine as long as it is not kept in the water all season.

As for the primer it is not a bad idea. It will give the paint a good base to adhere too.

Okay, primer it is, thank you gentlemen for the advise and the confirmation on the paint. I was looking at Interlux Pre-Kote for the primer, do you think this would be best or do you have any suggestions of a better product?

Check the paint manufacturer's literature for what they recommend with the paint you are using.

I used 2 coats of the Pre-Kote and 2 coats of Brightside with terrific results.

Thanks, that was the roue I was thinking but wanted to get some confirmation from someone other than the distributor or mfg. I like the real life plugs for a product. My boat is just under 16', how much material did you use and what size is your boat?

The boat is a 17 ft 4" Grady White. I used 2 quarts each of the primer and top coat. I just finished the project after nearly 2 years on and off. I'll try to post some photos in the next day or so. Best of luck with yours!
