Jeff,
Thompson did not have owners manuals for their boats.
To determine which model boat you have we need more info. Go to the Main Page on this site and click on "What Do I Have". Get all the info requested there and along with some photos of the boat we should be able to help you identify the model.
As for the outboard motor you can obtain reprints of the OEM owner, serice and parts giudes from Ken Cook Co. in Milwaukee, WI. Their webiste is
www.outboardbooks.com. Be sure you enter your model number correctly or it will not locate the manuals.
Your motor Model Number is a "V4AL-14" not 4VAL-14 as shown in your original message. They have the owners, service, parts and accesories manuas available for this model.
In your area I have a few possible loctions for NOS parts for Johnson outboards. These are Bayside Marine in Duxbury, MA, Millway Marine in Barnstable, MA, Russell Marine in Worcester, MA., Nauset Marine in Orleans, MA, Parker Marine in Alton Bay, NH, Thrston's Marine in Wiers Beach, NH and Hudson Marine in Salisbury. This are from an older list so I am not sure if they are still in business or not. Also check out American Outboard Salvage in Cordova, MD.
Good Luck,
Phill

Welcome aboard!
Cortland built Thompson Boats are a bit difficult to identify. The serial number is pretty much meaningless in determining the model year.
We need more infomation. What company name is on the serial number plate, completely and exactly. This is very important. What is the accurate centerline length of the boat? What is the gunwale length of the boat? What is the beam? What is the transom width? Is there an Outboard Boating Club capacity plate with maximum HP and weight capacity listed?
Photos are very helpful. You can email me directly:
thompsonboat@msn.com
There are NO owner's or operating manuals for Thompson boats. The companies just never published them. Manuals for the outboard motor pop up on eBay auctions all the time.
You can also get good information about old outboard motors at the "Ask An Expert" area of
www.aomci.org. the Antique Outboard Motor Club of America. They have chapters all over North America. Find one of their events near you and go check them out.
www.old-omc.de has old Johnson and Evinrude brochures posted on their site.
