splash well

I'm working on a '57 Cruisers Inc.. It looks like the inside of the transom was stained and the splash-well attached to it is not. The splash-well seems to be just varnish over wood. Is this correct? The splash-well looks like it is made up of plywood. Would this be original? Thanks

Can't speak with any authority on Cruisers, Inc. construction details. Plywood sounds correct, however, for splashwell construction.
