Outer keel attachment

My outer keel on my 55 Offshore was attached with 3/8 lag bolts. Is this original or should it be attached with #12 screws like the stem?

I really do not know for sure. However, I have only seen two carriage bolts in any of the Peshtigo built lapstrake boats I have putzed around with. And these are at the junction of the outer stem and outer keel. Screws are used at the outer keel elsewhere.

But maybe it was factory original in 1955 for their biggest boat. I just don't know.

Thanks. After getting into my boat I found were the keelson was patched at one time. The outer keel is attached with two carriage bolts at the joint with the stem but it had lag bolts else where. My inverted "T" keelson is held together with about six carriage bolts coming from below with nuts at the top.

I question the lag boats as being original.

I think you are right about it being original. All of the lag bolts and carriage bolts are steel instead of bronze.
