My guess is that the "paint like" stain is really tinted polyurethane varnish. That stuff does look pasty or paint like, not translucient like regular clear finish over stained wood. Any poly will be difficult to remove, you may be dealing with the color in the poly, not under it. Sorry no suggestions for speedy removal... just keep at it! Good luck.
