I'm curious about the best type of battery to use for the following application:
Evinrude 50hp with electric start, magneto and generator. Boat equipment would just be lights and a depth sounder. Might sit for a while at night with the lights on and the motor off.
Good car battery, deep cycle, marine battery?? What would you suggest?

I would recommend a good marine battery, they are designed for this type of application.
I also recommend the new sealed gel cell batteries for marine use. They cost more but they are totally sealed and will not leak and cause any problems inside your boat or the water for that mater. Also you do not have to worry about low electrolite levels due to evaporation in hot weather.
