I am interested in finding out what the significance of the wooden Grady White hull numbers are. Currently, I have compiled a list of five hull numbers off from three different models and five different years. It would be interesting to compile additional numbers to see if there is some type of pattern. The three models I have are; 16' Pamlico, 17 1/2' Hatteras, and 19' Pacific. Based on this information I have deduced that the first letter is for the model ie. A= Pamlico, B= Hatteras, D=Pacific. This first letter is usually followed by four numbers and then a letter. Here are the five numbers that I have any additional numbers would be great any thoughts on what they mean would be appreciated.
1961 Grady White 16' Pamlico A 8418 Y
1962 Grady White 16' Pamlico A 2620 Y
1963 Grady White 19' Pacific D 6219 Z
1964 Grady White 17 1/2' Hatteras B 8202 Y
1966 Grady White 19' Pacific D 5761 T
1966 Grady White 19' Pacific D 5695 T

Great info. I'll look thru the few G-W Boats hull IDs I have collected and add 'em to yur list.
The company has no clue what the hull ID's indicate. Nor do tehy have nay records or files. Any pre-1968 information was lost with the sale of the near bankrupt firm in 1968.

I found a few more hull ID's for Grady-White:
1964 model 204W Atlantic Weekender 20 1/2' C8-241Y
1965 or 66 model 174-O Hatteras Overnighter 17 1/2' B53787
1961?? model ?? B160ZE
196? model?? C6182T
I found a note in my files. I spoke to Jeff Brown at Grady-White Boats on 08 Feb. 2001. He thought the first letter was a length indicator. He said "B" is the 17 footer.
That's all I know!

"owdy. New to the site here. I am tring to identify the year of my GW. The previous owner thought it was a 1969, however I do not see that as possible. It is a 17'4" Hatteris Overnighter. Hull ID# B1 151ZG. I see i've added a new letter to the research. The previous owner bought it as salvage in 1979 for 100 bucks and sat on it in his garage till I purchased it in 2008 for 200 bucks with a '69 merc 500 that had never been on this boat.
I contacted GW but they seemed disinterested in helping me. They told me that info. was very scarce and basically left me to figure it out on my own.
Since buying I have completely stripped the hull and am in the process of filling and priming. The Cabin has been removed and will be refinished after i am done with the inside of the hull.
I was allowed to register in Michigan as a 1969 on my sayso but am looking forward to getting the year right before it is completed.

Correction.......I see the double letter at the end is already on the list.
Could this be the code for the cabin?

Is she wood or fiberglass?
As far as I know, the last wooden boats at Grady White were made in the 1968 model year.
Jeff Brown would be my recommended contact at the Grady White firm.
Other than a few brochure copies, the company does not have ANY pre 1969 information. The company was in a complete shambles when Eddie Smith took over in 1968. There were no records of boats built etc... I actually have a more complete collection of brochures than does the company.

Looking into the hull numbers has cause more confusion than conclusion. I have discovered there is a difference in the 17 1/2 Hatteras deck design. There are different construction methods used where the rear (stern) deck attaches to the transom. It does not seem to be year related, one method seems to be much stronger than the other; perhaps to accommodate twin outboards. Another thought could be that they made up the hulls in advance and pulled from inventory to fill orders. I have noticed that the G/W emblem is on the second strake down 1960-1963 and on the top strake 1964-1967.
This is a 1963 Grady lighter weight deck/transom connection. I have also seen this design on a 1965 and a 1967
This is a 1964 Grady heavier weight deck/transom connection. I have seen this on a 1961 as well
Keep the hull numbers coming in and I will update the list.

Mine is wood.
I have seen the brochures Grady White has online. Unfortunately they dont list any model years for the boats they show. Mine is very similiar to the overnighter in the brochure with 3 exceptions that I see so far.
The sides of the windshield on my boat are much smaller and i'm starting to think they might have been modified at some point.
The overnighter in the brochure has either fiberglass on the sides of the cabin or they are painted. Mine is natural wood.
Mine also has the "tall bow rail" on the front. Not sure of the correct term.
Next time I log on I will post some pics.

Pictures would be nice. The later model years offered a canvas type material as an option for the inside of the cabin. The tall bow rail was also an option. The side widow I am not sure but the earlier boats '59 and '60 had a curved side window.
