Why is it that there doesn't seem to be one format for which side the steering wheel is located on small craft? In north america all cars have the wheel on the left. In the UK Japan Australia etc, all are on the right.

Can't give an answer about automobile, but on boats the steeering wheel can be located on either side. Most are on starboard, but not all

In the old days it was to balance prop torque. Prop rotation, determined steering location.

Speaking of steering, does anyone have clear directions on how to wind the steering cable on a 1958 15'-9" Thompson? It goes down the starboard side.
