I like to use a chemical stripper before I start sanding. This helps break up surface and seems to keep me from over sanding and changing the shape and thickness of the pieces I am working on.
I sometimes do several applications before breaking out the orbital.

I have had good success using a heat gun and scraper. I follow that up with a light sanding. You need to be carefull not to heat up the wood too much and burn it. I just keep moving the heat gun and scraper and have not had that problem. Jim
