My two cents if you haven't cut your transom yet.
Try to find some one with a band saw that knows how to use it.
You are asking an awful lot of a jig saw trying to cut thru 3" of wood.
Maybe there is a local cabinet maker near you.
If you do use the jig saw I would suggest that you" leave the line" and then dress it down with a sander. My take longer but less chance of a problem.
Also, amongst my tools is a inexpensive belt sander which I bought because it has low RPM and will not cut right thru the as soon as you pull the trigger.
There is nothing wrong with a belt sander as long as you know how and what to use it for.
