new boat in the shop....

Post by Canoeboy »

I just purchased what I think is a Take-A-Long... Just under 12' in length, canvas covered. Hull number WX1261J.
What does the hull number tell me?

Hi Dave,

WX1261J can indicate:

1951 or 1961 model year. The 261st boat of all models made that particular model year. WX is a code for the builder and J is a code for the trimmer. These were codes for the two guys in the factory in charge of getting this boat completed.

Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. at Peshtigo made the Take-Along 240 in both 1951 and 1961 (even tho it's not in the 1961 brochure). It did not change much in that decade.

It has an aluminum deck tag. Do you know when they switched from brass?

Probably made the switch from brass to aluminum builder's tag before or during WW II. That's just a guess. But every boat I have seen built after WW II that has a builder's tag has it in aluminum.
