Caulk

Post by WiTerry »

A newby! have a 56 Seacoaster and starting to restorer. First of many questions. What kind of caulk works under the water line? I noticed a separation on the bottom rear edge - not bad but a possible water leak. Boat has not been in water for about 12 years. Thanks.

Something like a flexible marine caulk may do the trick. BoatLife has their Life Caulk. 3M5200 is a marine adhesive.

Do you need to replace bad wood or tighten fasteners?

Generaly, the wood seems not to bad. there are a few spots on the transom, at or above water line that are soft and one place that is rotted though.

History. This boat was purchased by my father-in-law in 1957 or 58. It was at the family cabin in norhtern MN for many years.

In the mid 70's, we flipped the boat and he put fiberglass cloth over most of the bottom and a 1 ft area inside. As I remember, it leaks some. He also re-varnished the top side.

I Have it mostly apart ( seats and removeable peices and have them sanded to bare wood.

I will post another overall questions later, now that my "cherry" is broken on this site.
