1962 Mercury 500 50 HP lower unit grease lube

Post by HalcyonDays »

Does anyone know the proper lower unit lube I should use? It is getting time to winterize and I would like to drain and re-lube. Here is what I have found out so far. There seems to be a product called Lubriplate that was used originally; however there is confusion in my mind as some sources say this was used for non shifting models( this 1962 merc 500 does shift) others have used this to help reduce the amount of water that can get into the lower unit if it's seals leak. The moden product is called lubriplate #105. It seems to okay to replace this with 90 weight oil or other lower unit lubes. any thought would be nice.

Thanks

You can use merc hi-viscocity gear lube for that motor. The 105 is for the really old non shift motors.
