Meranti Plywood

Anyone of knowledge of meranti plywood. Looks very similar to philippine.

Might be available in solid and plywood. Is there a marine grade?

They have marine grdae available.

Have not worked withthe wood, but looking it up onthe web I see it is being used for door and window framing and has very good chacteristics for stability, etc.

Good discussion going on at Woodenboat.com, thread titled "meranti plywood."

Turns out to best match I've seen is ribbon stripe sapele marine plywood as Phil Blank pointed out. Some places call it 1/4 sawm ribbon stripe African mahogany. Local lumber yard carries interior but not marine. Appears it should be manufactured under BS1088 or BS6566 difference being one is solid core and the other not. Anyone used it?

I used it on the '61 Peshtigo Sea Lancer I restored this past summer for the deck. Looks great.

Meranti or sepele ribbon stripe? Was it BS 1088 or Bs 6566?

Meranti BS 1088.

I had been using Okume BS 1088, but the local supplier is not stocking it any longer. He said Meranti is better anyway.

Very nice work.

Did you use varish only? Stain? Bleach before stain?

Found out today that BS1088 for both Okoume and Meranti has a 1.5 mm or greater thickness in the top ply. The ribbon stripe I've been looking at only has 1/2 mm thick top ply.

The picture is the deck of a 1961 Thompson Bros. (Peshtigo) Sea Lancer. The plywood is 3/8 inch Meranti. It is stained with Z-Spar "Standard Mahogany" stain, then sealed with one coat Old Salem Sealer and about 11 coats of marine spar varnish - Interlux Schooner No. 96. NO bleach.

The boat is for sale.
