What type of instrument is this?

Hello,

On our '62 offshore, there is an instrument on the dash mounted on top by the compass. At first glance, it looks like a compass...however, the dial has letters on it like "A" some X's" I think...what is this?

OK , this sounds like a challenge. Can you give us a more complete discription of the face of the gage. Actual lettering. Is there a needle?
