Where have you been?

Hey Bill The boat is at Lake Hartwell in the lake property garage. We are moving to Charlotte area but will continue to visit Atl area for years to come. I have a good couple months of moving stuff before I can get back at the boat. My thoughts are now on where to source plywood for bottom? Will I h...

Keelson In with pictures

Installed keelson this morning to allow transportation of boat to new location at Lake Hartwell garage. Plan is to install some plywood from stem to transom and secure to keelson and frames temp. so I do not loose the shape in transport or do any damage. Any suggestions will be appreciated on how to...

Great info Andreas. Looks like they may have planed the inner keel and stem after the frames were installed. Where is the discussion on the proper terms for the boat components? When I started a few years back I recall a discussion on terminology. I want to be correct as I move forward. A '63 Sea Ma...

The hull appeared to have good shape. I have replicated the keel. But the discussion on some of the posts has me thinking the keel was originally "straight" or flat from transom to stem. I just want to do it right. If replicating the originals that have been removed is the best approach, t...

Does sketch illustrate curvature of inner keel?

Andreas has posted a sketch on my previous topic. I'm not sure if he was implying that the inner keel has curvature toward the stem or not? If you have time look at the sketch. Any feedback is appreciated. Any others out there with knowledge of '65 Thomboy? Picture of replacement inner keel board. B...

Andreas
I found this sketch earlier and held a straight edge to the inner keel as drawn. Am I correct in seeing a slight curvature of the inner keel prior to the stem?

Rich Thanks for reply. Everything I'm looking at tells me there is a curvature to the inner keel: shape of original inner keel, terminating angle of the stem, shape and curvature of cheeks (sister keels on either side of inner keel). I have cut and shaped the inner keel and one cheek and wish to fin...

Original keelson curve/taper

Keelson (inner keel) at transom is 3 3/8 wide (tall) and 2 5/8 at stem. The top of the original board appears straight. The bottom is straight to a point approx. 4 1/2 feet from the stem then begins a gradual curve/taper to meet the stem and sit in the notch. If the bottom where straight to the stem...

By your description I need more heat. No "noodles" during my initial trial.
Thanx for your feedback.

side note:
I built a cedar strip canoe about 6 years ago. Rewarding project. A friend and I took on the project. Four hands are better than two.

Thanx for reply. I have read about moving the axis out by use of additional material. My issue here is that my boat is upside down with garboards off and will be feeding the frames in from the keelson to the deck. I plan on using the hull to shape the new frames. I may leave the old ones in place an...

Andreas
Would you use the original boards or replace?
I will have to caulk/fill gaps if I come back with the old.
Yes, the idea to use plywood come directly from one of your posts.
What bonding agent did you use between ply and wood?

Transom with plywood

Thanx John
I'm thinking about putting marine plywood between the boards when I rebuild. Thought is that this will create a tighter (water) and stronger transom.
Did your transom have gaps between the boards when you rebuilt?

Transom boards are separated-compression?

Looking to tasks ahead of me. There are gaps between the boards on my transom. I recall in one of Danenberg's books he mentions solid planks compressing against each other when they swell from moisture. Then when dried they separate. I will most likely remove transom. If I do this I'm thinking I'll ...

2/3 Keelson fitted

Got to spend about 8 hours today getting new keelson started. Pictures show middle section of keelson notched to run from transom to stem. Approx. 12 inches of keelson at stem will require shaping. Old keelson was shaped at stem plus tapered on top at interior of boat. http://img200.imageshack.us/im...
