Re: Transon TOO THICK?

Thanks Robert, exactly what I plan to do. I mostly concerned that the opening on modern engines is wide enough to handle a 3" think transom. My existing engine has a hook to hang the engine from and then I'd bolt it. It's about 3 1/2" open so I'm OK if I use it but might switch to a smalle...

Re: Plank Refasten - NEED SCREWS

Thank you Andreas and thank you Verne! I hadn't thought about McMaster Carr and also looked at Grainger's who has them and is on my way home. Thank you again, Tim

Transon TOO THICK?

Hello all, I'm replacing the transom on my 1968 20' Offshore. The original transom was 2" thick (alternating vertical inside and horizontal outside mahogany boards) from the factory and then someone tried to stiffen it up with junky plywood epoxied on the inside. The very bottom of the original...

Plank Refasten - NEED SCREWS

Hello all, All (760 or so) of the machine screws fastening the planks between ribs on my 1968 20' Offshore are #6-32 X 1" Philips flat Head with a nut, either brass or bronze, not exactly sure which. I need about 800 of these things and having trouble finding silicon bronze that small. MUST be ...

Re: Offshore Rub Rail

Thank you once again Andreas! I did get a response back from member Chris who has the closest boat to mine that I know of. He sent a link to pictures he took prior to his restoration and I was able to see the rail you are describing. I'm guessing the rope stuffed c-channel on my boat must have been ...

Re: Offshore Rub Rail

Thanks very much for the reply Andreas! I'd be interested to see an example of the aluminum and vinyl rail, I'll try to attach a pic of what I have on my boat currently. And you are correct of course, no way in knowing if it was changed between now and back in 1968. I certainly do want to use whatev...

Offshore Rub Rail

Good day and Happy New Years to all! I have a 1968 20' Offshore Camper and in the middle of restoration. I removed the rub rails yesterday to prepare to remove and replace the transom. I would like to know if the rub rail was installed at the factory. It is a hard rubber "C" shape with a n...

Hi Steve,
I'm just about where you were at with my 1968 20' Offshore Camper and was interested in progress since your March 03, 2011 post. I don't see any updates since then. Did everything go so smoothly that your finished and on the water?

Thanks first for the suggestion from Verne of a "shock" treatment. I had tried my hand impact driver and air impact to no avail. Maybe some vertical rather than radial "shock" as you suggest might be more persuasive. It's just going to take lots of time I guess. Buyer beware, the...

Thanks for the encouragement Andreas and Barry! I tried a Craftsman tool last night, Screw Out , which I hoped would do the trick. Well, it didn't, primarily because it's difficult to center the tool in the head slot and when it connects it walks off the side of the screw head and digs into the wood...

Disappointed Disassembly

I'm working on removal of garboards and planks from my 20' Offshore Camper. I have read most every post on garboard and plank removal on the site. I have the boat upside down and have been struggling with corroded fasteners. The garbords are held with slotted head screws for the most part, nails alo...

Let's see if this works: http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1980/1000750v.jpg There, that's better. I tried Citristrip on the port side but I think my shop was too cold, didn't work very well. New 240V garage heater comning today, should warm things up better and I'm going to try Multi-Strip next. Tim

Hi Peter, I've attached a picture of my keel at the transom. I have no history of my boat so I can't say if the configuration was original, probably not. There is a piece of brass half round from the bow all the way to the transom and it extends above the transom a few inches. Good luck with the tra...

Thompson Offshores

Hi Peter, my name is Tim and own a 1968 Thompson Offshore Camper (model 2060). I've just started to restore the boat here in the Seattle area. She leaks like a sieve so I knew the planking would need to be resealed. The transom needs to be replaced too from having a 125 hp outboard hanging off the b...
