Back to the Restoration
Last year I had posted pics of my dissasembly of a 1962 cruiser inc. Model 202. I had to take time off from the boat after that for some home remodeling, vacations, etc. Now it's finally back to work on the boat. Last week, with the help of my son and a few friends, the boat was moved into my shop. ...

I think about 20% of the sealant was still holding. How did you clean off the old sealant on the lap area? Sanding? Also, how much work time does the 5200 give you? I need enough time to put in almost 100 screws for that row. Finally, how many tubes of 5200 will I need to buy? I have 8 laps on each ...

Lapstrake sealant
When I reassemble the lapstrakes on my 62 Cruiser, Inc., what sealant should I use? I know the strongest sealant/adhesive would be the 3M 5200. In doing a search on this site, it looks like some controversy over using the 5200 for the lapstrakes, mostly based on the difficulty of removing the lapstr...

Yes, I am planning on making some sort of jig to hold the ribs in the proper shape after they are steamed until they dry. I'm not sure what type of jig to use yet. Looks like each of the 5 ribs is slightly different from the other, so it will require 5 different jigs. The jig should probably hold 2 ...

We removed the set of 4 lapstrakes on the other side also. Here's a picture of the unit in the shop awaiting disassembly: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s297/fastsuv/62%20Cruiser%20Inc/LapstrakeRemoval044640x480.jpg It was a lot easier to unscrew the machine screws in the shop. There were quite ...

Yesterday we removed the rest of the boards on the right side of the boat. We are leaving the topmost lapstrake on. Here's a picture of the boat with one side off: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s297/fastsuv/62%20Cruiser%20Inc/LapstrakeRemoval031640x480.jpg Something different for removal of the...

Last night we took off another two lapstrakes on each side. Before we removed those two, we made a support for each end of the lengthwise floor support (to keep the ribs in their proper place). here's a picture of the support: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s297/fastsuv/62%20Cruiser%20Inc/Lapstr...

Last night we took off the other garboard and one lapstrake on each side. Here is the picture so far: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s297/fastsuv/62%20Cruiser%20Inc/LapstrakeRemoval009640x480.jpg I had previously mentioned a few hidden nails through the boards that were covered up by the lap of ...

We finished stripping the paint off the hull yesterday. It came off pretty easily, a few small spots required harder scraping with the pull scraper. Here's a picture: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s297/fastsuv/62%20Cruiser%20Inc/Stripped640x480.jpg Now the next step is to remove the putty from ...

As a first step, I stripped the bottom paint (copper antifouling) using Citristrip. Since my boys were helping me I didn't want to use the extremely hazardous strippers. The Citristrip worked very well. Here it is after one 24-hour application and a couple of hours with a pull scraper: http://i155.p...

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and information. I'm looking forward to removing the garboards and starting the renovation process. Right now we (Lockport, NY) are in an unusual cold spell, last night it was below freezing so hopefully it will warm up soon. I have put Citristrip paint stripper o...

Plywood garboard removal
In my previous post, I described a boat-flipping fixture. I have now flipped the boat and got a good look at the bottom keel area, where I had previously removed the outer keel and stem. The boat is a 16' 1962 Cruiser Inc. There appears to be more bad wood and rot than I thought previously. The insi...
