Re: 1958 Cruisers Seafarer

Buck,
Not knowing what the actual bucket weighs, I will venture a guess that you have at least 15 pounds of screws in the bucket.

Re: Stem Repair

Portside,

I recommend waiting until adhesive has cured then tighten the screws. Also it might take longer then a week for the boat life to cure before it can be sanded and painted. Give it time for a good cure.

Good Luck,

Re: Cleaning question

The Thompson Catalogs you mentioned are available thru this website: http://www.wcha.org.
They have the Thompson catalog DVD & Thumb drives as well as other boat and canoe manufactures catalog DVDs available.
A very good source of info

Re: 60's Thomboy repair/restoration

You could try some vinyl cleaners and if that does not work the only alternative is replacing it.

Re: 60's Thomboy repair/restoration

lenthan, Wood type recommended would be Mahogany, as thegammas mentioned, it is rote resistant, light in weight and easy to work with. As to locating the gas tank in the bow, that was very common and one can always trim the motor to offset the weight. I have seen custom "V" shaped tanks in...

Re: Trailer fender

Shaun,

If you can not find the fender you want on E-bay, look at what Fleet-Farm has to offer.
Also look online for firms that handle trailer parts.

Good Luck,

Re: Changing Trailer tire size

John, If you change tire size you will need to also change the fenders as the originals will not have enough clearance for the larger diameter tires. Also check the clearance between the boat hull and the existing fenders to be sure you can get a larger tire and fender installed which will not hit t...

Re: Cleaning question

LancerJohn14, I know of no product that will dissolve resorcinol glue. The only way is to break the joint, which generally ends up splitting the wood not the glue joint, or cutting the joint line with a saw of some type. I would not think the keel would have been glued down from the factory, it woul...

Re: 60's Thomboy repair/restoration

Lenthan, If the wood is sound and not rotted. You can clean out the gap to be sure any old glue or debris is out of the gap and fill it with "Boat-Life" caulking. Be sure to force the caulking deep into the gap. Allow to cure for a day and refill to bring it above the surface if has shrunk...

Re: Outer keel and stem replacement

Jason, Quarter saw white oak can be found by looking thru lumber of the correct thickness you are looking for by going thru a stack of lumber to find boards with growth rings that are perpendicular to the width of the board. Also a board that has growth rings parallel to the width can be cut into st...

Re: refinishing my thompson

Tyler,

Unless you plan on having the boat in the water all season, I see no reason to use anti-fowling paint on the hull. A good coat of marine gloss paint will be fine.
If the boat sets in water everyday then spend the money on anti-fowling paint other wise it is not worth it.

Good Luck,

Re: Thompson Bros. Cortland plant

tmcconnell, I do not know of any way of positively finding the year of a boat built in Cortland, NY. I can tell you that it appears you have a model know as the TVT Hydroplane Runabout. These show up in the catalog's from 1935 thru 1955. Sorry, I can not be of more help on the year of manufacture. T...

Re: Outer keel and stem replacement

Here is a photo of a hull being built which should give you some idea of what was originally done. http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd449/phillblank/ThompsonJig02_zps1duywibo.jpg I hope this is of help. The screws and bolts on the keel should be countersunk and plugged. The flat head screws and s...
