Addreas is the resident expert on Thompson boats. I restored a 1960 Cortland boat about six years ago. I think if you sand down or strip the paint off the outside keel you will find 3" to 4" long screws every foot or so that are recessed into the outside keel. Hope this helps

The correct fix would be to replace ribs, garboards, keelson, and keel. Short of doing this will be a compromise. Another compromise would be to add trim tabs, I have seen a lot on older wooden boats. .

Brian, I restored a Thompson like yours two years ago, The one I restored had a serial number of 56173 where yours is 56111. Mine shipped out of the factory on 1/6/60 where yours shipped out 12/29/59. Same models. There should be no metal attached to the transom. There are two metal/aluminum strips ...

Thanks for the thoughts. I was hoping there was a product that broke down the fiberglass much like a paint stripper. My guess is that it would have to be very powerful, not for the faint of heart. Looking at a boat that is a true "barn find". But... previous owner fiberglassed the bottom six inches of transom and a section of the hull around transom six inches forward only below water line. Can I strip this fiberglass off? Or do I have to replace the boards? I think I know why they ...
